#amwriting #politics #england #UKIP Leave #England Alone

Perhaps the most terrifying revelation to come out of the internet drama between Sargon and Metokur was the news that Sargon is working on a definition of Englishness for UKIP.
One of the great things about being English is that it’s pretty much optional.
We don’t have a national costume: though it should be noted that at the time the Scots were re-inventing themselves as kilt wearing Celts, there were suggestions that a similar thing should be done in England. The proposed costume being a puffy Cavalier style shirt, and dark blue velvet knickerbockers.
We don’t have a national dish, though depending on who you speak to various suggestions will be offered: the Sunday Roast, Fish and Chips, and Chicken Tikka Masala. A case can be made for each of these, and plenty of other things, but none of them really count. Because if we are to follow the rules for re-creating history in order to define national characteristics, whatever is chosen must be vaguely ethnic, less than appetizing and practically never eaten: think haggis or lava bread.
Anywho…
What I find odd about the whole notion of defining Englishness, is that it stems from a rather pseudo-debate that claims there is no English culture; or in the terms of the debate, the culture is not inclusive enough. And, generally when one engages in the debate it devolves into all kinds of absurdist claims: like Morris Dancing isn’t English, because it is an adaptation of Moorish Dancing from Spain…. at which point I am reminded of quote by Thomas Beecham…. and would point out the inclusiveness inherent in cultural appropriation, but…. meh….
It is a perennial problem, and if you are linguistically minded you might notice that we have cows, sheep and pigs, but eat beef, mutton and pork. Which by extension would suggest that the English worked the land, while the Anglo-Norman aristocracy, concerned as they were with their Anglo-French Empire, ate the produce.
A similar problem faced the revolutionaries in America, who saw themselves in part, and to a greater or lesser extent, as English — obviously not those whose origins were from elsewhere. They sought to solve the problem by adopting German as the national language — in much the same way as Hebrew, Irish, Welsh, and a host of other languages have been adopted in order to define national characteristics. Unluckily for the English, particularly, in the age of the internet, they didn’t adopt this change: meaning that school-children these days have atrocious spelling thanks to American-English spell checkers.
Throughout history, and literature, examples can be found of people and politicians seeking to define, re-define, and otherwise project their own prejudices onto a notion of Englishness. Occasionally, these memes catch on.
For instance, if you go and look up the history of the Sunday Roast you will inevitably find reference to ‘the roast beef of Merry Olde England’. And by implication you will be encouraged to believe that the Beefeaters in the Tower of London all sat down to Yorkshire Puddings, carrots, cabbage, peas and mashed potato, all juicily covered in mouth-watering Bisto. That they didn’t, is neither here nor there. They were more likely to have had the beef with bread and a salad of herbs and flowers such as primrose or violet.
But we like to kid ourselves, and as with anything, the more you appeal to antiquity the more truthful it sounds.
Perhaps one of the more famous attempts to seek a defintion, and one much derided, was attempted by John Major when he said,
“ Fifty years on from now, Britain will still be the country of long shadows on county grounds, warm beer, invincible green suburbs, dog lovers and pools fillers and, as George Orwell said, ‘Old maids bicycling to holy communion through the morning mist’ and, if we get our way, Shakespeare will still be read even in school.”
He uses the term Britain, but for all intents and purposes he is talking about England. This is clearly the case because it is from this quote that the current usage of the pejorative phrase ‘Little Englander’ sprang, and particularly the reference to ‘warm beer’- and ‘warm beer values’.
And thus the political slanging match in the 1990’s became centred around this quote. It was complicated by the Labour seeking to use the question of devolution for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to gerrymander their relative weakness in England. At the time the Scots had the ‘oh so Scottish’ Mel Gibson and and Irving Welch giving them the rallying cry to lead them into the nirvana of endless Labour rule in Scotland. While in England, using Britian as a proxy-term, the battle was between the Major government’s hard-line Europhilia and the Bastards: or ‘Little Englanders’.
It is interesting when considering the Brexit vote, the similarities between the Remain campaign, and the tactics employed by the Major government to whip his party back into line. For those of politically nerdish bent, it is also interesting to consider the way the politics of this debate played out in Wales. With the Welsh barely voting for devolution, and then voting for Brexit. Given that the rationale of the Labour party was that Wales would be as keen as Scotland to endlessly vote them into power, thus giving them a wedge at general elections. And, foolishly Tory-Remainer Theresa May thinking she could pick up Welsh votes at the last general election — the obvious clue her being Tory and Remainer.
The upshot of this political battle in the 1990’s was that when Tony Blair won the 1997 general election he faced the problem of a very divided country.
This aspect is usually either ignored or down-played in the popular narrative. Or it is massaged to try to claim that the issue was one of class — as illustrated by the story of Peter Mandelson being asked if he wanted anything on his chips in a chip shop, and pointing at the Mushy Peas and saying he would have some of the Guacamole — or of race.
In truth Labour had only itself to blame. They had won the election by stoking the Conservative divisions over Europe. But the only way they could do so was by masking the divisions within their own party over Europe, and particularly the Mastricht treaty.
They were also faced with the issue of devolution, which they had promised, but had not really considered much. Why should they? Scotland always voted Labour, so what did it matter if power was devolved?
But just to be safe they set out to define Britishness.
It was all rather odd.
Labour politicians were popping up all over the place telling anyone who would listen what it was like to be them.
According to Robin Cooke, the national dish was Chicken Tikka Masala. Which was news to vast swathes of the country who had probably never heard of it, let alone eaten it.
There was another side of this. In additional to hectoring people about what they liked, they became increasingly censorious, telling people what they shouldn’t like, say, do, wear, or be: if they wanted to be a good Briton.
In a sense this all came to a head with the Millennium Dome, and the new Festival of Britian.
When the project was announced there was some excitement. Drawings were produced showing roller-coasters and grinning people enjoying a jolly day out. But as time went on, and the hamburgers were banned, and the roller-coasters disappeared, the whole thing became as preachy as the government.
Instead of a family fun day out, people were invited to a exhibition of ‘who you are’. Complete with an invitation to walk up the rectum of some giant human body and see how their kidneys work. Plus there would be a wall of pictures showing just how diverse and multi-cultural Britain had become.
It was all under-whelming.
And it rather missed the point.
Had they made it like Blackpool Pleasure Beach, they wouldn’t have needed a wall of pictures to show this because you would have seen it as you queued for the rides, or wandered around.
Go to any fete/gala/fun-day in any reasonably sized town, and you will find stalls selling curry, hot dogs, pizza, tacos, donuts, whatever. You will see people of all shapes and sizes. What you won’t see, is a wall of pictures of people who aren’t there, that somehow are meant to better reflect the people who are there.
This idiotic approach, was nothing more than a desperate effort to hold their party together. Because shortly after the devolution settlement it became clear to English Labour MPs just what a pup they had been sold.
The Barnett Formula was still in place. The West Lothian Question remained, and made more complicated by MPs in devolved constituencies not voting on matters devolved to the regional parliaments, i.e. not voting on matters affecting their constituents, but having the right to vote on matters in England for which no one could hold them accountable.
Oh and there were people like Lord Steele, who was both an MSP and had a seat in the House of Lords.
Plus there was the unresolved issue of Europe.
Eurosceptic Labour MPs may well have been happy to go along with the party’s tactical policy to weaken the Conservatives over the Mastricht vote. But now they were on the government backbenches, with a Europhile Labour government on the verge of ditching the pound and talking about a federal European government.
Austen Mitchell was certainly one such MP. Another was the current Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
And another was an ex-Labour MP turned Talkshow host Robert Killroy-Silk,who in 2004 was elected to the European parliament as a UKIP MEP. The party secured 16% of the vote.
Suddenly the ‘Little Englanders’ were back in the political lexicon.
The government may well be able to ban smoking, or turkey twizzlers, but trying to a ride the two-headed horse of Englishness and Britishness in a devolved United Kingdom is not something you can legislate. Particularly when at the same time you are trying to force them to be European.
At the end of the day, Mushy Peas are not Guacamole, no matter how much you wish it to be.
One of the funnier stories to emerge from this period in which New Labour was wearing a ‘Kiss Me Quick’ Sombrero, was a much hyped regeneration project in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, that was supposed to turn the town centre in something akin to a Tuscan plaza, replete with men in flat caps sipping glasses of wine, while telling witty bon-mottes about their ferrets.
Like the roller-coaster pictures of the Millenium Dome, the architect drawings looked nice: the reality was somewhat different.
Which brings me to how I would define Englishness.
In the wonderful Ealing comedy, Passport to Pimilico, Connie Pemberton says,
“ Don’t you come that stuff, Jim Garland! We always were English, and we’ll always be English, and it’s just because we are English that we’re sticking up for our rights to be Burgundians!
Or maybe it’s writing a poem, while walking in the autumn mists and thinking of Keats.
Whatever it is, I wish politicians would stop buggering about trying to define it, and then getting stroppy when they get called out. They would be far better off trying to resolve the political mess they created for short term gains. es, Major’s vision was in some ways ludicrous, but in other was it is far more in touch with the reality of the life people actually lead — small pleasures and all that — than some grandiose fiction based on ticking boxes on forms.
Still rest assured that whatever Sargon comes up with, no doubt it will be Liberalist and based on the theories of Locke and classic English Liberals… or some such nonsense.

#amwriting #politics #internet #Sargon vs #Metokur — A #UKIP Loss

For lovers of internet drama yesterday provided a treat.
In one corner was Sargon of Akkad — of ‘white n*$^!r’, ‘I wouldn’t even rape you’ fame, and in the other was Jim — Mr Metokur.
Quite why Sargon of Akkad would want to go after Jim is not obvious: nor would it seem particularly sane, given that he has gone into politics by joining UKIP. But then you might argue that this is the latest in a series of rather odd moves by the aspiring politician.
He was a speaker at the Free Speech event in London organised by Tommy Robinson. Which is fine I suppose, he advocates for free speech.
He read the text of Enoch Powell’s “Rivers of Blood” speech on the streets of London. Which again is fine, he advocates for free speech, and opposes open border immigration.
He appeared last week at the EU parliament to oppose Article 11 and 13, the so called ‘meme tax’, in his role as advisor to UKIP. Again fine.
This would all seem to fit with his Liberalist principles, based on the writings of such luminaries as Locke and John Stewart Mill.
And in some ways you can understand why UKIP might want popular YouTube celebs to boost their profile, and perhaps connect with new audiences, or to find a way around the media: who have tended in the past rightly or wrongly to portray them as a party of amateurs. David Cameron famously described the party as consisting of ‘fruitcakes and closet racists.’
Yet one wonders what political advantage there could be to going full on ‘retard’ — in the parlance of online shit-posters — in response to some mild ribbing about his suit.
But perhaps I am just a ‘boomer’ unused the movement of the Overton Window, and the new paradigm in politics that has gone beyond the horse-shoe theory… or some such.
However, the accusation that the suit made Carl of Swindon — as Jess Philips called him — look like a manager in Applebees, was too much for Sargon. And so a live-stream was scheduled, complete with prepared reading material. This reading was not, as one might expect, some deeply learned treatise on good governance but a bunch of links to gossip culled from the interwebz that was going to bring Mr Metokur to heel.
The feud between them has been going on for quite sometime.
Originally they were ‘allies’ in GamerGate, when Jim was using the moniker The Internet Aristocrat, and the two would appear on appear on chatstogether to debate the latest dastardly doings of the SJWs, and in particular Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkessian.
But while Jim moved on to laughing at Furries and exposing Kurt Eichwald, Sargon became the leader of the so-called Skeptics.
The problem is that Jim’s schtick is laughing at people when they ‘fuck up’, and over time rather a large number of people connected to the Skeptics have rather ‘fucked up’.
For instance Amos Yee, who came to fame for being imprisoned in Malaysia for insulting Muslims, for a time became the darling of the Skeptics, due to their history in Atheist Youtube, until he came out as a pedophile. Sargon defended him.
Or David Sherratt, the MRA MGTOW who appeared on Sargon’s show to discuss this and that, before going on to set up the twitter account “Hardon for Assad” to troll Sargon. Oh and there was the business of his Qatari girlfriend
Oh and then there was the Kraut and Tea saga, in which Sargon’s ‘internet friend’ Kraut and Tea — having made a name for himself by being a Skeptic and opponent of Muslim immigration — got into a fight with the alt-right over race-realism. He set up a Discord server, in which he gathered so-called Youtube Scientists, to research and formulate response videos to alt-right claims on race.
However the academic qualifications to join were somewhat lax. Seemingly anyone could join — which may explain Kraut’s assertions on the gestation period of trout — and ‘internet communities’ being what they are, the server attracted in the Skeptic community.
It wasn’t only serious scientific research going on in this Skeptic University. There were high level spy operations, with the intention of infiltrating the alt-right to plant false information, spy on their research, and such.
Obviously when you are working on top secret research, and espionage, it is important to invite journalist Amy Harmon from the New York Times to come and see what you are up to.
When the story came out it was all to much for Sargon.
Not forgetting Killroy, the Free Speech conference born out of Vidcon, that was a somewhat less than spectacular event.
True Sargon was not involved in Killroy, but his ‘community’ was.
And through all of this, and more, there was Jim in the background laughing.
And so we come to the Ballad of Mundanematt.
Matt Jarbo, like many of the Skeptic community, made his name during GamerGate when Zoe Quinn (boo! hiss!) filed a false DMC claim on a video he made about allegations of her cheating on her boyfriend. He went from a channel making ‘edgy’ content, and talking about his life, to a voice for GamerGate, who also read the news.
But success has a price, tall poppies and all that, and when Bloodsports got underway and all the ‘shitlords’ came out to play, why it was enough to make a grown man cry.
So the ‘free speech advocate’ began flagging — falsely or otherwise — channels and streams that criticised him. And he would have got away with too, if he hadn’t been for Ethan Ralph and the meddling kids on the Ralph Retort (yes I know it is 2 hours long but it is worth a listen in full).
And a month later, and despite Matt offering an apology…on Tumblr… his videos are still being voted down and his comments are less than flattering, despite many being deleted and all mention of boulders being verboten (in the name of a free speech).
And in the way of these things, people have started digging through Matt’s twitter and going through his video catalogue to find whatever dirt they can. And being trained ‘teenage trolls’ (explanation coming later in the article) they have been bringing them to Jim for his Sunday Live Stream.
Thus on the Sunday before the suit furore, Jim did this stream of Matt related news, and also included was analysis of Bunty King’s video ‘I’m a Cuck, Let’s Talk’. Plus a declaration of intent to dig up more dirt on the Skeptic ‘community’.
It should be pointed out here that during the discussion on who the woman ‘cucking’ Bunty King might be, gossip was aired about the goings on at Vidcon, in which Sargon’s name came up, along with certain rumours of infidelity. Now I wasn’t there, so I can’t say who did what to whom — and frankly I don’t care — but I would suggest that this might have annoyed Sargon.
And so we get to the Sunday clash of the Livestreams.
Sargon landed the first punch.
I say punch, because for the first 20 minutes there was no audio. When he switched the audio on, his thesis was that Mr Metokur was grooming an army of ‘teenage trolls’ for ‘shits and giggles’, further that he was actually grooming kids (since no internet spat would be complete without calling someone a pedo), and that Jim is an ‘attention whore’ desperate to get Sargon’s attention — when Sargon had much better things to do, like his aspiring political career.
He laughed at the notion that when he ‘is’ a politician anyone would ask him about the allegations that his ‘internet friend’ Mandanematt might, or might, not have been involved in shenanigans with the daughter of the church pastor.
Which makes me wonder why he bothered to do this stream in the first place… but maybe that’s just me.
And so we waited for Jim’s reply, which came in the form of a stream entitled Goodbye, Carl — which if anything signals an end to a bromance, that does.
Jim pointed out that the source material for Sargon’s thesis was written by a confessed internet troll. So when they claim to have blackmailed police, or impersonated government officials, they might just be ‘fucking’ with you.
And it should be pointed out that by the time Jim streamed, comments to Sargon’s video had begun to come in — Sargon having disabled the chat in his Livestream, which he explained was because he didn’t want the Superchat money going to Billy Joel.
One of these comments was from Youtube celeb, DL:DR.
Now this comment either had 1800 likes and was sent to spam by Sargon, or went straight to spam — presumably without 1800 likes. But either way, it provoked Sargon to make a response.
I bring this up, rather than continue with what Jim said, because it rather makes the point of why picking this fight was such a bad idea. Not least because the response ends with a rather agitated Sargon saying, “you are going to ignore this because you are a shallow, cowardly pussy. Who is driven by his own ego, and is projecting it onto me. Because you are jealous, because no one watches your channel because you are boring as fuck.”
Now I’m all for a bit of rough and tumble, verbal jousting in politics.
But honestly UKIP what are you doing?
Not least because supposedly the BBC are currently making a documentary about Sargon — which may or may not have something to do with this affair.
Perhaps the idea is to edit the show to portray Sargon valiantly fighting the dragon of the alt-right. Which would explain why this stream was put up, so that Sargon can show the abuse he gets online, and the tough way he deals with it.
But if that is the plan then this is some pretty deep 4D Chess.
Or more likely TL:DR made a video some months ago pointing out that joining UKIP was a hollow gesture, and Sargon reacted badly…. and took this opportunity to vent his spleen.
Either way, UKIP might do well to pause and consider, particularly when they have spent the past decade trying to shake off the mantle of being ‘fruitcakes and closet racists’.
Still it should leave the SJW’s chuckling.

#amwritng #comics #comicsgate Why I Support #Comicsgate

I support #comicsgate.
There I have said it.
And given Comicsgate’s reputation, and the rewriting of it’s history in the media — for instance in the Washington Post or the Guardian, as well as a whole host of online publications — no doubt you’ll take me for some alt-right transphobic mysognist or whatever.
However there is something that people are completely over-looking in all of this. Namely that all of this press coverage is rather missing the point.
There are various reasons why Ethan Van Scriver and Richard C Meyer have become the focus: they both have large Youtube followings, they both produce regular content, and they have both benefited from the Streisand Effect.
However what the critics fail to perceive, is Mr Van Scriver’s show Comicsgate Live also sells comics, by bringing on creators, allowing the audience to get to know them, and promoting their work.
Now I get it… I’m not a fan of the whole “soy-boy” this and “SJW” that… but what I don’t understand is why instead of endlessly screaming “Nazi”, like some extra from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, why people don’t adopt the the hashtag and use the business model.
But it’s toxic, you might say.
Well maybe, given the endless algo seeding going on, and the biased reporting in the media.
However, at some point people will wake up and understand something very simple — namely the way the algos work.
Yes, yes, I realise we are all special, and independent thinkers, and total unbiased, rational and objective in our view of the world: but computers aren’t.
It is well known that by creating two accounts, on say Youtube, and depending upon your initial searches, after a relatively short space of time you will get wildly varying content appeared in you recommended feed. Therefore I would suggest by recognizing this, if you are comic creator, you would do well to utilize whatever hashtags to break out of the digital ghetto to which you have been assigned.
And rather than join the dog-pile of #comicsgate you might consider using it.
And you might say, “yeah but no but, I’m gay/black/female/trans/etc and I would be wasting my time because the media has told me these people hate me.”
Newsflash… the media lies.
Not all the time. And perhaps not deliberately.
I know when I used to write for magazines, one of the first bits of information I would be given was how much the subject of the article had spent on advertising. The more they spent, the nicer I would be in the article. It’s just the way it works.
There is no need to go all Alex Jones. But it is worth pointing out that Marvel and DC are part of large corporations, and it must be rather irksome when trying to explain the current market to their bosses up the corporate ladder the relative success of #comicsgate products.
Particularly when they spend so much on advertising.
But in a sense we have been here before.
About 15 years ago, on the Radio 4 arts program Front Row (as it was called then) there was discussion about the sudden growth in comics by and for women and the LGBT community.
The problem with their analysis, in hindsight, was that while they argued this would never challenge the Superhero genre, or Manga, it would add to the growth of the market.
And it did. The problem is when you start mixing them together.
Yes, Yes, I know, I know, you have gone off half-cocked, and missed the point I’m making.
Their assumption was that Superhero comics would always sell, no matter what. And that this ready market, and the new market would cross-pollinate but remain distinct. However, and this is a debatable point, the cross pollination has been the usual corporate fudge.
The corporations in an attempt to control the market, and suppress the ‘competition’ have created hamburger-ice cream
If you want to use the political labels of ‘right’ and ‘left’, the difference then is that #comicsgate was a ‘left’ wing movement, and now it is a ‘right’ wing movement. Oh and the toxicity to pollute the stream of those seeking change had different buzzwords.
Which brings me back to point of promotion.
Crowdfunding comics is not a new thing.
The success of Jawbreakers and Cyberfrog is in large part down to their promotion. Hence why I suggest rather than endlessly hyping them by attacking them, use the hashtag and copy their model. Start Youtube channels, build an audience, tap into that market — particularly if you sense from your recommended feed that you are fenced off from potential customers that support #comicsgate.
Yeah fine, you might get Nerkish roasting you, but so what?
If it gets our name out there, and gets people to see your art, you might just sell some comics.
Which is surely the point.

#amwriting #sketchbook blackberries

This year the blackberries
slide more easily from their stem,
in perfect stunted capsules
of sugared earth.

Parched then drenched
they have not bubbled,
but wait half pecked,
ripe but not ripe to the eye.

#amwriting #poem #poetry Autumn

Autumn

Through morning misty rain, the berries bright
with temptation:
we watch the distant hills.

High upon the moors, slowly creep the smoke
of clouds, colder
than our dew soaked boots.

Something has changed, the sweet chestnuts split
from their shells
to whisper Christmas.

And we walk by, looking ever upward,
smelling only the gathering shower
now falling on the cairn.
